Grandad’s Magic by Bob Graham is a heart-warming story about a little girl who looks up to her grandad and his clever magic tricks.

Suggestions For Using This Mentor Text To Teach Writing:

As usual, Bob Graham includes strong VOICE in this text, and we can see how the WORD CHOICE and SENTENCE FLUENCY are manipulated to create this voice. (E.g “Three dogs lived in Alison’s house. Two sat high on the shelf. They were very precious to Alison’s mum. They were very breakable.” We can hear Alison’s personality coming out here).

Suggestions For Using This Mentor Text To Teach Reading:

This book would be great for discussion PREDICTING with junior students as Bob Graham gives us lots of clues to weave together to predict what will happen (eg. Why did he mention the breakable dogs? Why did he mention the dog sleeping on the couch?)
