Mentor Text Review: Meet… The ANZACS

  • Author: Claire Saxby

Meet…the ANZACS is another one of the terrific books in the Australian ‘Meet…’ series.I really enjoyed reading this interesting book about an often unheard of time- the time before the war. I have read many books on the ANZACs but none quite like this one. It is certainly worth a look!

Suggestions For Using This Mentor Text To Teach Writing:

This one provides a unique perspective in the ANZACs as it informs readers on how the ANZAC legend began (IDEAS). It explores the lives of the first World War soldiers before they got to the war front (and it is really fascinating!).

Alongside the unique perspective on the ANZACs, author Claire Saxby writes in an engaging and compelling way (VOICE), providing interesting details in a logically organised text (ORGANISATION).

WORD CHOICE, such as the inclusion of similes, assists with the voice and the overall SENTENCE FLUENCY of the text.

Suggestions For Using This Mentor Text To Teach Reading:

This book would be useful to discuss making connections with prior knowledge on the topic (MAKING CONNECTIONS). It certainly opens itself up
to QUESTIONING and would be a useful text to practice SUMMARISING.
