Most teachers are taught that comprehension = strategies.
But strategies alone aren’t enough (and deep down, you already know that!)
The Comprehension Rethink helps you make sense of comprehension instruction using research, real classroom practice, and a clear way of thinking about why students struggle to understand texts and what to teach next.
Designed for F–6 teachers, this course works alongside phonics and fluency instruction, not instead of it.
Develop a clearer, research-aligned approach to comprehension in just 8 weeks.
Does this sound like you?
-
You’ve been teaching the comprehension strategies… but your students still don’t really understand what they're reading.
-
Your comprehension lessons feel repetitive, surface-level, or like they're missing the mark.
-
You want comprehension to sit coherently alongside phonics and other evidence-aligned reading instruction.
-
You're either guessing your way through comprehension instruction or following a pre-prepared program without really understanding it.
-
You’re not confident about what to teach, when to teach it, or why it matters.
And perhaps the hardest part...
- You can tell something isn't working, but no one has offered a clear alternative.
Introducing...
The Comprehension Rethink
"This professional learning has genuinely been a 'new dawn' experience. I cannot believe I used to teach reading/comprehension the way I did. This course is truly transformative."
Learn how to:
Understand what actually drives comprehension
Learn why strategies took centre stage, what research says is missing, and what truly supports understanding.
Teach the elements that support understanding
Learn how to explicitly teach background knowledge, vocabulary, syntax and text organisation.
Diagnose why students struggle to comprehend
Pinpoint what’s getting in the way of your students' comprehension and know what to teach next.
Hello, I'm Riss Leung.
I’m an Australian literacy consultant with 8 years’ experience working alongside primary schools to strengthen reading and writing instruction. I’m a former primary school principal, Teaching & Learning coach, and Book Week judge.
I work in schools every week, and it was this work that led me to create The Comprehension Rethink.
I kept noticing the same pattern. Many schools were making strong progress with phonics, but felt far less confident teaching reading comprehension. Teachers had thoughtful questions, but very few clear, evidence-aligned answers.
This course brings together research, classroom trialling, and real-world experience to offer a clearer and more confident way forward.
My strength is translating complex research into clear, practical guidance teachers can use straight away, and that’s exactly what this course is designed to do.

"If you're someone who still believes that teaching reading through comprehension strategy units is the way to go, this course is for you. The research presented in this professional learning is compelling and clear — it explains not only why that approach fell short. Yes, it may challenge your thinking, but it all makes complete sense when you sit with it.
What makes this course especially valuable is the practical classroom examples that show you what this actually looks like."
-Literacy Leader
"While I had already encountered the Big 6 and the research behind the science of reading, this professional learning brought all the pieces together. Using the mentor text to demonstrate what comprehension support looks like has made the learning relevant.
It has genuinely shifted my thinking, not only about how I approach reading instruction myself, but about how I lead and support teachers in planning reading lessons."
- Assistant Principal
"It has been transformative in the way I am reshaping my understanding of reading comprehension (i.e., from a Workshop mindset to a more structured lens.)
It makes so much sense from the niggling doubts or frustrations I experienced when developing curriculum within a single year level, and now across multiple levels!"
