Effective Think-Alouds in Reading

Done well, think-alouds are a highly effective teaching practice for reading instruction.

So why does the research say it is such an underused practice?

Why think-alouds?

Effective think-alouds are one of the most useful tools you have in the reading classroom.

When you demonstrate reading -and share your thoughts aloud as you do so- your students learn about the internal conversation all readers have as they engage with a text. Although this conversation is critical in building comprehension as you read, it remains a secret for far too many students (who often have no idea about all the chatter that goes on in the mind of a proficient reader.)

Don't be fooled into thinking you can pull any book of the the shelf, read it and share your thinking aloud though, there's much more to effective think-alouds than you might first think!

Course feedback

Michelle

“I loved this PD as it wasn’t too long and overwhelming. It was perfect, straight to the point and easy to understand. I know exactly what I need to refine and how to be more explicit when coaching my teams with the delivery of lessons online and within the classroom. The resources we received are very helpful.”

Sonia

“I have a deeper understanding of how to perform think-alouds- the theory behind it and its importance as well as the three stages involved in an effective one. I feel more prepared and confident when planning and creating lesson plans that incorporate think-alouds for reading comprehension strategy lessons as well as incorporating it within my writing lessons."
