The NAPLAN narrative and persuasive marking guides.

helps teachers understand the qualities assessed in the NAPLAN  writing assessments.

The 6+1 traits of writing.

provides actionable teaching points and a common language for discussing writing improvement.

These rubrics give schools a common language for writing assessment and instruction.

Rather than every teacher using different criteria or focusing on different aspects of writing, staff can work from a shared framework that supports moderation, reporting, planning and professional conversations about student writing.

The result is greater consistency across year levels and clearer pathways for improving writing outcomes across the school.

A Rubric Designed to Support Assessment AND Instruction

Each writing assessment rubric is organised around the six traits of effective writing:

• Ideas
• Organisation
• Voice
• Word Choice
• Sentence Fluency
• Conventions

Within each trait, writing is further broken down into specific criteria that represent individual writing skills. These criteria act as clear "look-fors" during assessment, helping teachers identify exactly what a student can already do and which skills require further development.

The example above shows a sample of the Organisation trait expectations in the Level 3 NARRATIVE assessment rubric. The complete rubric contains six writing traits, each broken down into specific, observable writing skills.

Specific Criteria That Drive Instruction

Many writing rubrics assess broad qualities of writing, making it difficult to pinpoint exactly what a student can do and what they still need to learn.

These rubrics take a different approach.

These rubrics break writing into specific, observable skills that act as clear "look-fors" during assessment. This allows teachers to identify precise strengths and weaknesses within a student's writing, rather than relying on general impressions or broad achievement statements.

Importantly, each criterion can also become a focus for explicit instruction. Once teachers identify an area requiring development, they can use that information to plan targeted teaching that addresses the specific writing skills students need next.

The result is an assessment tool that not only measures writing achievement, but also helps guide future instruction.

A Developmental Progression from Foundation to Year 6

The rubrics share a common structure across all year levels, making it easier for schools to establish consistency in writing assessment and moderation.

Most criteria remain consistent across the primary years, although some have been adapted to reflect the different developmental needs of Foundation–Year 2 and Years 3–6 writers. Within each year level, the descriptors become progressively more sophisticated, ensuring that expectations remain aligned to student development and curriculum requirements.

This approach provides both consistency and flexibility, allowing schools to assess writing using a common framework while recognising the unique needs of writers at different stages of learning.

Emma, Literacy Learning Specialist

“These rubrics have been a game changer in the way we assess our writing. They are such a useful tool when assessing our cold writes and have helped us to know which key qualities of which traits we need to hit for our writing unit. This has made creating the learning intention and success criteria a breeze. We use them again for our warm writes, and can see exactly where students have grown, and what work still needs to be done.”

One Assessment Framework Across Three Writing Genres

Schools assess student writing in multiple genres throughout the year. That's why this package includes rubrics for Narrative, Informative and Persuasive writing from Foundation to Year 6.

Using a consistent assessment framework across all three genres helps teachers moderate more effectively, report with confidence and develop a shared language for discussing writing across the school.
